Law enforcement in Sacramento are looking into a shooting incident that erupted on the evening of April 18 at Howe Park in Sacramento just as deputies were dispersing an unauthorized event of a crowd of several hundred.
How It Started
Sacramento County law enforcement initially got calls about the Arden-Arcade park just after 6:30 Saturday evening after learning of individuals who may have had concealed firearms. Soon after, a follow-up call was made mentioning a reported physical confrontation unfolding inside the park.
A sheriff's airship scanned the area from the air but reported no active disturbance. However, deputies found that hundreds of people had packed into the park without official sanction.
The Shooting Itself
Responding units began the process of clearing the park by forming click here a perimeter and using their vehicle PA systems ordering those gathered to leave immediately. Nearly 15 minutes were allowed for people to comply.
At the height of the dispersal effort that upwards of 20 gunshots rang out. The rapid succession of shots sent hundreds fleeing. Officers swiftly started locating gunshot victims.
Four Gunshot Victims
Altogether, four gunshot victims were located with gunshot injuries. The victims — comprising three men and one woman ranging in age through their in their 20s at the time of the incident — were taken to hospitals in the Sacramento area. Medical personnel confirmed that two were treated for serious injuries, one victim's injuries were classified as moderate, and one sustained minor gunshot wounds. As of last report, each of the four victims was stable.
The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department provided support and helped care for the injured at the park.
Physical Evidence
The bulk of the shooting was believed to have been concentrated on Cottage Way near the local Home Depot situated at the 2200 block of Howe Ave. Investigators recovered additional shell casings on the Cottage Way roadway. Ballistic damage were also found in the wrought iron perimeter fencing bordering the Home Depot. These discoveries showed that a second shooter had been aiming south from Cottage Way targeting the Home Depot. The Home Depot was placed on lockdown while law enforcement worked the area. Forensic investigators and law enforcement detectives stayed at the location throughout the night.
Arrests Made
Details gathered through law enforcement radio communications revealed that a vehicle identified as a Kia was intercepted in the Solano County area. Four detainees were in the vehicle at the time of the stop. Sacramento law enforcement were sent to retrieve the detainees to transport the detainees for further questioning. Video evidence confirmed that two separate shooters participated in the incident.
